First we will take a look at the local Market, where, besides the flowers, you can see a wide variety of fish, vegetables and exotic fruits. After the market place we will pay a visit to one of the largest embroidery factories, where you will have the chance to see exquisite cloths being completed. From here we will go to the outskirts of Funchal to the Botanical Gardens to enjoy all the seasonal flowers, tropical and sub-tropical plants and trees. Before returning to your hotel a final stop at the Wine Lodges, where you may sample as many and as much as you please.

Madeira West – Porto Moniz


Madeira West – Porto Moniz » Full Day Excursion with Lunch Included
This is the grand tour of the island, a long, full day’s trip, but well worth while and not to be missed. We will start off early in the morning, heading west along the southern coast. Our first stop is at Câmara de Lobos, a small fishing town, made famous by the paintings of Sir Winston Churchill. We will then go on to the world’s second highest sea cliff Cabo Girão, passing banana plantations and wine-yards. In Ribeira Brava, we will stop for a short break. Then we will leave the coast and head north, through the beautiful valley of Serra D’Água up to the summit of Encumeada, where both sides of the island can be seen at the same time. After paying a visit to São Vicente we will discover one of the most beautiful points of the north coast – a road built on the rocks by the sea where we can admire the astonishing waterfalls, to reach Porto Moniz, a village on the north-west coast, well known for its volcanic swimming pools. After lunch we will drive up the winding mountain roads up to Paúl da Serra, the only plateau on the Island at 1400 Mts. high, and down again through Canhas and Ponta do Sol before taking the road back to Funchal.


 

Eira do Serrado & Monte

From the centre we will drive up to Pico dos Barcelos, a beautiful viewpoint over the town and bay of Funchal. We will then go up into the mountains, through eucalyptus and mimosa forest, as far as the belvedere of Eira do Serrado for the breathtaking views into the long extinct volcano crater, where now nestles the village of Curral das Freiras, also known as the nuns’ valley. We will then take the road eastwards to Monte. Monte’s famous church contains the tomb of Charles the 1st of Austria. From here you may experience the famous toboggan ride in basket sledges, down the old narrow road, which leads to Funchal (optional and with supplement).
 

Madeira East – Santana

Our first stop after leaving Funchal will be Camacha, a village famous for being the wickerwork centre. We will pay a visit to the factory where you can actually see the artisans working the willow, and purchase articles from a wide collection available. At the summit of Pico do Arieiro (1810 Mts.), the 2nd highest peak on the island, the views over the surrounding mountains, peaks and valleys are breathtaking. From the mountaintop we will go down to Ribeiro Frio, with its natural park and the famous trout hatchery. Then after visiting the beautiful area of Faial, we will go up to Santana, famous for its colourful cottages, where we will stop for lunch. After lunch, we will continue on to Portela pass, viewpoint at 670 Mts. where we can view the impressive rock formations of the Eagle’s Cliff and the valley of Porto da Cruz. Before returning to Funchal, we will visit the town of Machico, where the Portuguese first disembarked in 1419.
 

Walking Tour – “Levadas“


This will be a half-day walking tour trough the mountains - Levada (irrigation channel). The wild and exuberant vegetation allows you to feel, all along the year, the freshness of the nature, always with beautiful overviews over Funchal.
